ASAS cooks up a storm on Park Avenue

After School All Stars In The EXKi Kitchen

Before the holidays, After-School All-Stars had a very special visit to the eco-friendly restaurant EXKi NYC.  Volunteers from Teza Technologies, New York Life Insurance, and Mondelēz International were also on hand to help out!

Our All-Stars from the Dual Language Middle School in NYC met with Chef Galan Zamarra and Executive Chef StevScreen Shot 2015-12-15 at 9.20.10 AMen Mettle for an interactive cooking lesson. We made vegetarian pea soup, butternut squash hummus, and a fruit smoothie for dessert.  For most of us, it was the first time in an industrial kitchen.  During the lesson, students learned about Chef Galan’s worldly travels and his journey to become a chef —-  challenges included!

After the cooking lesson, students met with Environmental Economist Pamela Peeters to discuss how the food we choose impacts the world we live in as well as our own health. The 10 students that came on the trip were part of Pamela Peeter’s Eco Hero art challenge, which took place at the Dual Language Middle School in November. The students with the most creative art piece and highest attendance rates were rewarded with the cooking class at EXKi.
